Nathan B. Sandler
Co-Founder and Managing Partner, ICE Canyon LLC
Nathan B. Sandler has been a leader in Emerging Markets investing since 1994. He practices a disciplined investment approach that emphasizes capital preservation and long-term value creation from income and capital appreciation. Mr. Sandler seeks to deliver results through rigorous research and scenario analysis, expansive global coverage, and a multi-sector focus. This investment approach has been used to identify and exploit the widest range of Emerging Markets and Global Credit investment opportunities across every sector of these expanding markets. In addition, Mr. Sandler has successfully managed Emerging Markets Fixed Income and Global Credit strategies through multiple economic and financial crises, including: Latin America financial crisis (1995), Asia financial crisis (1998), Russia devaluation and default (1998), Brazil devaluation (1999), Argentina default (2001), and the Great Recession (2008).

Prior to joining ICE Canyon, Mr. Sandler was Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager responsible for Emerging Markets and International Fixed Income at TCW (1994 to 2006). At TCW, Mr. Sandler built a leading global investment platform and successful long-term track records in total return and leverage credit arbitrage investment strategies. Previously, Mr. Sandler specialized in US government bond trading and arbitrage as a founding principal in a leveraged fixed income fund and as a Vice President and Senior Trader at Security Pacific Bank. He began his career in Chicago as a derivatives specialist in institutional futures and options sales. Mr. Sandler holds a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Drake University.

Joshua S. Friedman

Joshua S. Friedman and Mitchell R. Julis are Co-Founders, Co-Chairmen and Co-Chief Executive Officers of Canyon Partners, LLC, a leading global alternative asset management firm headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Canyon manages approximately $20 billion in assets, specializing in credit-oriented investments for endowments, foundations, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and other institutional investors. Canyon’s investment strategies focus on bank debt, distressed debt, high yield and convertible bonds, securitized assets, direct investments, arbitrage and value equities. Canyon also invests in real estate through Canyon Capital Realty Advisors, and in emerging market debt securities through ICE Canyon LLC.

Mr. Friedman is a graduate of Harvard College (B.A., summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Physics), Oxford University (M.A., honors, Politics and Economics, Marshall Scholar), Harvard Law School (J.D., magna cum laude) and Harvard Business School (M.B.A., Baker Scholar). Prior to forming Canyon, Mr. Friedman was Director of Capital Markets for High Yield and Private Placements at Drexel Burnham Lambert. Prior to working at Drexel, he worked in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department of Goldman Sachs in New York. Mr. Friedman is also a director and trustee of a number of nonprofit and charitable organizations.

Mitchell R. Julis

Mitchell R. Julis and Joshua S. Friedman are Co-Founders, Co-Chairmen and Co-Chief Executive Officers of Canyon Partners, LLC, a leading global alternative asset management firm headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Prior to forming Canyon, Mr. Julis directed a group of professionals responsible for a portfolio of distressed and special situation securities at Drexel Burnham Lambert. Prior to working at Drexel, he was a bankruptcy and creditors’ rights attorney at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York. Mr. Julis has authored a number of articles published in law journals and other periodicals on the subject of bankruptcy and distressed credit investing.
